第二次世界大战初，三个英国军官在混战中逃出战俘营，预备穿过德军守卫区，进入瑞典后逃回国内。但是一路上危险重重，德军的严密防守使得三人寸步难行。天真的杰克•罗斯和诚恳的汤姆•威利斯最终没有得以逃脱，而尼克•马克格雷德跳上了开往伦敦的火车。临行前，杰克拜托他到了伦敦一定要找到自己的未婚妻丽兹，告诉她自己一定会想法逃回伦敦娶她为妻。作为第一个从战俘营中逃出来的军官，马克格雷德回到伦敦后被上层领导大大赞扬了一番。 上级批准马克格雷德加入了M19组织，并协助巴尼将军进行英国战俘的营救行动。回到英国的马克格雷德并没有忘记杰克被捕前的嘱托，凭借秘密组织的情报优势，他找到了在医院做护士的丽兹。但是从见到丽兹的第一面起，马克格雷德就爱上了这个长相甜美的女孩，并对她展开了热烈的追求。但是丽兹深爱着杰克，只要爱人一息尚存她都决定等下去。马克格雷德对杰克产生了从未有过的嫉妒，为了让丽兹死心，他凭借自己的工作便利，伪造了杰克死在战俘营的证明。 杰克的死给了丽兹很大的打击，而马克格雷德的热情让她受伤的心渐渐平复，于是接受了他的爱，二人结成了夫妻。在战俘营中受苦的杰克根本不知道外面发生的这一切，而他写给丽兹的信也总是石沉大海。杰克和威利斯多次尝试逃出战俘营，但换来的只是一次次失败，但是杰克并不死心，对丽兹的爱是他最大的支持。狱中的所有战友都知道杰克在伦敦有一个未婚妻在守候，而一向沉默的画家军官索瓦也不由被他打动，为他的爱人画了一张肖像。 在又一次死亡逃亡中，索瓦侥幸逃出战俘营回到伦敦。但他所看到的却是马克格雷德已经娶杰克的爱人为妻，而部队里到处传播着杰克的死讯，直觉告诉他马克格雷德从中做了手脚。在狱中的杰克得知自己的爱人已经嫁给马克格雷德大为光火，冒着生命危险从战俘营中逃了出去，辗转回到了伦敦。马克格雷德见事情再也隐瞒不住，于是打算带着丽兹远走高飞，但却不想这一切恰巧被丽兹识破。马克格雷德因为无意中杀死索瓦而被上级击毙，而丽兹也在尝试再次接受杰克.

One possible suspect is Michael Steppings who threatened the Brewsters and their nurse after his daughter suffered severe side-effects and is now in a vegetative state from a botched operation two years previously. The forensics lab determines that one of Steppings's threatening letters was altered and Morse learns that Brewster may at one time been having an affair, so he must consider another possible motive for murder.
